๐Overview
Aphthous stomatitis, often referred to as recurrent aphthous stomatitis or canker sores, is a benign condition and the most common cause of recurring oral ulcerations. These shallow lesions typically develop on the movable mucous membranes inside the oral cavity, including the inner cheeks, lips, and the base of the gums.
This condition is clinically distinct from other oral lesions and is not caused by the herpes simplex virus. Although these ulcers can be painful and may interfere with eating or speaking, they are not transmissible between individuals.
