๐Overview
Bunions occur when the first metatarsal bone shifts medially while the big toe angles toward the smaller toes, resulting in a structural misalignment of the metatarsophalangeal joint. This progression causes the joint to protrude outward, creating a characteristic bump that changes the shape of the foot.
Known medically as hallux valgus, this condition involves a complex change in the underlying bony framework rather than a simple growth of bone. This structural shift can lead to localized swelling and changes in the alignment of the forefoot bones.
