๐Overview
These lesions are caused by the herpes simplex virus, primarily type 1 (HSV-1), which is highly contagious and spread through close contact. After an initial infection, the virus often resides in a latent state within local nerve cells.
Periodic reactivation of the virus can cause the sores to recur in the same location. Although most commonly associated with the lip area, these outbreaks may also affect other parts of the face or the mucous membranes of the mouth.
