These tumors typically develop in the duodenum or the pancreas and are the primary cause of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The resulting hypersecretion of gastric acid often leads to the development of severe peptic ulcers within the upper digestive tract.
While many cases occur sporadically, the condition may sometimes be associated with an inherited disorder known as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1. This hormonal imbalance disrupts typical gastrointestinal function through the sustained stimulation of acid-producing cells in the stomach.
