Hereditary nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia (HNSHA) is a legacy term referring to a group of inherited hemolytic anemias characterized by chronic red blood cell destruction without the presence of spherocytes on blood smear. The modern preferred terms encompass various enzyme deficiency disorders affecting red blood cell metabolism, such as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, pyruvate kinase deficiency, and other red cell enzymopathies. These conditions lead to hemolysis due to impaired red cell energy metabolism rather than membrane defects.
