Refractory anemia is a legacy term historically used to describe a group of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) characterized primarily by persistent anemia that does not respond to standard treatments. The modern preferred terminology classifies these conditions under myelodysplastic syndromes with single lineage dysplasia or other MDS subtypes. These are bone marrow disorders marked by ineffective blood cell production and varying risks of progression to acute leukemia.
