Urea Cycle Disorders
๐Overview
Urea cycle disorders (UCDs) are a group of rare inherited metabolic conditions caused by deficiencies in one of the enzymes of the urea cycle, a liver-based process that removes ammonia from the bloodstream. These disorders lead to the accumulation of ammonia, a toxic substance, resulting in hyperammonemia. UCDs are classified by the specific enzyme affected and are also known as inherited hyperammonemia syndromes.
